Coins (Interpreting the Past Series, No 3)
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (September, 1991)
Author: Andrew Burnett
Average review score:

Beyond Coin Collecting
In this book Andrew Burnett writes that there is the wealth of information that coins can contribute to our understanding of the past. For example, the coins minted by Richard the Lionhearted and his brother John all carried the name of their father Henry II because public confidence was based upon an unchanging design. Or for another example, the coins minted by Caesar Augustus phased out the use of divine symbols when depicting the emperor. The political message sent by the coins was that Augustus was "first among equals." Not surprisingly, Nero reinstated the use of divine symbols on his coins. The political message here is that Nero was "first without equals." As historical sources coins have a couple of advantages. One is that they were officially produced. And the second is that they were massed produced.

_Coins_ is a concise yet very interesting book for readers who want to get beyond coin collecting.

Daughters and Sons
Published in Hardcover by David & Charles (June, 1937)
Author: Ivy Compton-Burnett
Average review score:

A wonderful book
Compton-Burnett's artificial prose style takes some getting used to, but her sublime brand of comedy is a rare treat. Characterization is really not the author's forte, but her descriptions of social and familial interaction are packed with blinding flashes of insight.

Early Negro Writing - 1760-1837
Published in Paperback by Black Classic Press (April, 1997)
Author: Dorothy Burnett Porter
Average review score:

Black history didn't start on "JuneTeenth" Day
Dorothy Porter's research that went into this book was not the slave trade or slave uprisings and the violence that characterized the 1760 (pre-revolutionary) through 1837 (pre-Civil War and Emancipation) period of American/African history although mention is made.

Porter introduces and reproduces significant documents of the period (at least 26 years before the Emancipation Proclamation - June 19th, 1863 - and the end of the Civil War) that tell of the trials, tribulations, day-to-day goings-on and achievements of "free" blacks throughout the period, typically in urban centers such as Boston, New York and Philadelphia, where newspapers and publishing houses were likely to be.

The result in fact closely mirrors the state of black society in urban United States today. Her chapter headings: I. Mutual and Fraternal Organizations -- II. Societies for Educational Improvement -- III. Significant Annual Conferences -- IV. To Emigrate or Remain at Home? -- V. Spokesmen in Behalf of Their "Colored Fellow Citizens" -- VI. Saints and Sinners -- VII. Narratives, Poems and Essays

Porter's book should be required reading if there is any interest in the nascency of the abolition, segregation and women's suffrage movements OR of the impact of the Revolution, changing economic conditions and markets, and burdensome influx of "freed" and "escaped" slaves coming up from the "slave" states on existing black communities in the "free" states.

Authors: Frances Hodgson Burnett and Henry Sandham
Average review score:

A Classic Story!
I have an original 1888 copy of this book, and did research on Elsie Leslie, the original 1888 Broadway star of the play(she was only 7!). This book will delite anyone, young or old. It shows the humanity of a man that really regretted being a thief. A great story, with wonderful morals (something usually not seen or taught these days). THIS IS A MUST READ!

Imagine assembling over 300 missionaries, mission leaders and professors of missions to ask them any question you wanted. Now imagine that they addressed over 1400 topics. This new encyclopedic dictionary has done just that. With 700 topical articles, almost 500 short biographical articles, and hundreds of country profiles, the Evangelical Dictionary of World Missions is a veritable goldmine of up-to-date information on missions.

The authors include people from East and West, North and South; practioners and teachers. All have written in non-technical vocabulary and evaluate their assigned topic(s) in light of evangelical thought. The book is decidedly Christian and missiological in tone.

There are short bibliographical notes at the end of many articles and a good indexing system.

A truly fascinating and perceptive survey
Ever Against The Stream: The Politics Of Karl Barth, 1906-1968 is an impressive and informative survey drawn from the many speeches and letters of Karl Barth, a man who spoke loudly against National Socialism in Germany and Switzerland, and who confronted enemies among those in the churches in Switzerland who wanted to give the state more absolute power over its citizenry. Average review score:

The First Texans
As a teacher of Elementary School social studies, this book has become an invaluable resource for my classroom. The format is easily read and understood by students. It has a wealth of information about each Texas Indian tribe. This book is much easier to read and understand than any other book on the subject that I have found. A must-have for every classroom and library. A classroom set makes it much easier for students to do their research, since they fight over a single copy!
